10 Percent, A Word by Bill Johnson

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” Proverbs 3:9-10

God doesn’t need our money. Not only does He have complete control of all the money in the world, but it isn’t like He is saving up to buy something He really wants.

He is the Creator of all things (again, He doesn’t need our money), but He will test our hearts with money. Matthew 6:21 tells us that, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). He wants us to have no other gods but Him (Exodus 20:3), including the god of money.

He asks us to give a tenth, or a tithe, of what we earn to honor Him. You have to understand, it’s not a one-way transaction. We don’t give to God and He forgets about it. No, these verses say He blesses us when we give to Him. Think about all of the ways God has blessed you over the last year. There is plenty more where that came from!

I have no problem giving ten percent of my money to God. It reminds me that money is just money. It’s not my friend; it’s just a tool that God gives me to steward.

God is so much more than anything money can buy. He is: my Good Shepherd, my Master, my King, my Friend, my Companion, my Protector, my Provider, my Father, my Hope for everlasting life and my Joy when my life is hard.

He is my Savior. When I reflect on that and then look at all of the income He has given me and all of the ways He has provided for me, I will gladly give Him the ten percent He asks for.

Church, let’s spend this year seeking God’s Kingdom and His Righteousness instead of worrying about money and the things of this world.

Happy to give,

Billy
