Dry Bones

“O Sovereign Lord,” I replied, “you alone know the answer to that.” — Ezekiel 37:3b

This is the prophet’s response to a question God had just asked him. The Lord had led the prophet Ezekiel to a valley filled with dry bones. After looking at the bones, God asked Ezekiel, “Can these bones become living people again?”

I love Ezekiel’s response. This verse was very encouraging to me in a recent quiet time. Sometimes, in my own life, or with friends and family, or situations in the church, it is easy to get discouraged. What will happen with this or that person or circumstance? But, I was really encouraged by Ezekiel’s heart. It is almost like he was saying, “That is a tough question, God. What do you say?”

After Ezekiel’s question, God told Ezekiel to speak, to prophecy to the dead, dry bones. God did an amazing miracle after Ezekiel spoke in faith. The bones were covered with flesh, muscle, and skin. Then breath was given to the bodies and they came back to life. Imagine that scene. It is crazy to think about a valley of dead bones being transformed into an army of people. (No doubt this will be a popular movie in the Heaven seven-plex one day).

God then explained the meaning of that miracle. That mighty army was a demonstration of how God was going to bring the spiritually dead nation of Israel back to life. The application for us from this story is clear. When we see a situation that is discouraging or overwhelming, we need to fix our eyes on God. What do you say, God? God then commands us to speak His truth into the situation! Keep your eyes fixed on God, speak His word and see what He does.

Speak it to yourself, your family, your friends, and the Church. See what God does. “You alone know the answer to that, God!”

Fixing my eyes,

Josh
