“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1: 3-5
When I recently read these verses, three words really stuck out to me — Imperishable. Undefiled. Unfading. The idea of these three amazing words can seem so unbelievable in our world of decay and chaos.
Sadly, everything we can see or touch is fallen. Cars lose their value as soon as they leave the sales lot. Houses fall apart at an unimaginable rate. Health can quickly go downhill. Everything in the world eventually gets covered in dust and rust. I can’t even wear white shirts anymore. Countless times, I have put on a brand new, spotless shirt and no less than five hours later a food stain has found its way onto it. The shirt is forever ruined, soiled by my clumsiness. It seems as if everything is in an all out sprint towards disorder.
To be honest, I can’t quite wrap my mind around the beautiful truth from the verses above. It is absolutely mind boggling, beyond my simple comprehension and wildest dreams. Christian, this is our hope. All we have seen is the sad state of this busted world, but the Bible (in multiple passages), encourages us to fix our minds and our eyes on the unseen things from above that are truly lovely and pure.
What God has in store for those He has called, is out of reach of this quickly perishing world. Living with Christ for all eternity will be without death or spoil, unblemished by sin, and it will always stay that way! It won’t even begin to crack or fade. Quite possibly, the most amazing part of it all, is found in verse five. Peter tells us that God Himself is personally protecting and preserving us for that life. Hallelujah!
