D.A.W.G. — a word by Pastor Steve McInroy from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "in my earlier days as a Christ follower. I made time in my busy schedule for what we lovingly called a D.A.W.G. (Day Alone With God)."

I acquired a habit in my earlier days as a Christ follower. I made time in my busy schedule for what we lovingly called a D.A.W.G. (Day Alone With God). We can all agree that life can sometimes be overwhelming. Not only do we want to do it all, but we also want our families to do even more than we ever did. Our phones throw data at us like ants marching toward spilled pie and ice cream on a hot summer sidewalk.

As I look back on my early days as a young Christian, I see a wife, three kids, and working overtime as an electrician. In hindsight, I was just learning to zealously serve the Lord. Along with trying to figure out the concept of a balanced life. Much like a skateboarder learning complicated tricks, it was a roadrashy time in my walk with the Lord. I specifically remember one of the many conferences my wife Jeanne and I used to frequent. The speaker introduced me to the idea of a Day Alone With God.

Getting Started

Admittedly, I clearly remember thinking, “How in the heck will I ever add this into my life?” I was already surviving on only six hours (maybe) of sleep a night. All things considered, I really couldn’t see any wiggle room for a new discipline.

A friend shared some advice I needed. I’d told him I felt too busy for a D.A.W.G. day. For this reason, he said I should consider making time to get my direction from the Lord. Thankfully, he gently coached me. Perhaps start with setting aside three hours and then build on it as time allows? I was really surprised when he said he’d find a secluded spot and often started with a nap. He was usually that tired. Then, he had a list of things he brought to the Lord. Most often, he also included a prescribed section of Scripture. Possibly something pertaining to what he was wrestling with.

Consistency

This verse is often my mindset. Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” Jesus himself would frequently get away (alone) to pray. Mark 6:46 says, “After telling everyone good-bye, he went up into the hills by himself to pray.”

To be honest, I have plenty of time by myself these days. However, I find myself a bit out of step in the consistent practice of getting longer times alone with God. I was once in a marching band, so I realize it’s just a corrective step to help one get back in step. It’s almost a skip, if you will.

I will be in the middle of a two-week sabbatical when this posts. Please pray that the Lord would reveal Himself to me in profound ways. The first week may have many naps. And that’s certainly alright. Rest is important. But even more satisfying is hearing from God. Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is alive and powerful, it is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit. Between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Consistency is key. Develop a plan and then work it. Don’t try to set the bar too high. Give it a try.

Have a D.A.W.G. — I dare you! A life yoked with Jesus is indeed a life in step with the One who created you.

Your brother in Christ,

Mac
