The Olivet Discourse is one of the most important prophetic teachings Jesus ever gave. It’s recorded in the Gospel of Matthew 24–25, the Gospel of Mark 13, and the Gospel of Luke 21. We call it the Olivet Discourse because Jesus delivered it on the Mount of Olives, just east of Jerusalem, shortly before His crucifixion.

The setting matters. In the Gospel of Matthew 24, the disciples point out the grandeur of the temple. Jesus responds with a shocking prophecy: not one stone would be left upon another. That prompts two questions from the disciples: “When will these things be?” and “What will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?”

From there, Jesus lays out a sweeping prophetic panorama.

First, He warns about deception. False Christs, false prophets, spiritual confusion. Then He describes wars, famines, pestilences, earthquakes—what He calls “the beginning of sorrows.” These are birth pains, increasing in intensity as history moves toward its climax.

He then speaks of persecution, apostasy, and a global proclamation of the Gospel. The message of the kingdom will go to all nations before the end comes.

At the center of the discourse is what He calls “the abomination of desolation,” pointing back to the Book of Daniel. This signals a time of unprecedented tribulation—what we often call the Great Tribulation. Jesus describes it as a period unlike anything before or after.

Ends In Glory

But the discourse doesn’t end in chaos—it ends in glory.

Jesus describes His visible, powerful return. The sign of the Son of Man appears. The tribes of the earth mourn. And they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and great glory. He sends forth His angels, and they gather His elect.

Then come the parables: the fig tree, the faithful and wicked servants, the ten virgins, the talents. And the message is clear—Watchfulness. Readiness. Faithfulness. No date-setting, no speculation—just steady obedience.

The Olivet Discourse is not meant to produce fear in believers. It’s meant to produce clarity, endurance, and hope. Jesus tells us ahead of time so we won’t be shaken when things unfold.

In short, the Olivet Discourse answers three great questions: “Where is history headed?”, “What should believers expect?” and “How then should we live?”

And Jesus’ answer is simple: Stay alert. Stay faithful. The King is coming. The disciples may not have understood at the time, but this promise still holds true.

God bless you!

Reflection Questions for Today

1. In our world today, we may be seeing “the beginning of sorrows” (spiritual confusion, wars, famines, earthquakes). What truths can we hold on to as we look to answer the question, “Where is history headed?”

2. Jesus says His return will be visible and powerful — believers are to be watchful, faithful, and ready. What expectations should believers have as they prepare for Him?

3. The Olivet Discourse is not meant to produce fear. How can the words of Jesus help us not be shaken when things unfold? How then should we live?
