There was a common practice in rural North America in the 18th & 19th centuries. And Amish and Mennonite communities often practice it today. It was a time when the entire community came together to build a barn for a family in their community.
Neighbors from miles around would show up — farmers, blacksmiths, and merchants. Some brought tools, and others brought food. Skilled workers handled the preparation, the structure, and specialized labor. At the same time, others carried wood, hammered nails, or simply supported when needed. Even women and children participated where they could.
And after one or two days of this shared work, the community built a new barn. Furthermore, the whole community would do the same thing for the next neighbor who needed it.
I think this is a beautiful picture of community service. It also shows what a community can quickly accomplish when everyone works together, and does their part.
Building Walls
We see similar communal work in Nehemiah 3. “Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate… And next to him the men of Jericho built. And next to them Zaccur the son of Imri built.” — Nehemiah 3:1-2
Nehemiah 3 lists individuals and families who participated in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. They were faithful to rise to the challenge and call. Plus, they were faithful to build their section of the wall. Some were even assigned the section near their home.
Together, they rebuilt the wall in just 52 days. An amazing accomplishment that brought glory to God. Not only that, but people around them noticed what God accomplished through them.
We can look at this story and example and see how it applies to the opportunities we have in our lives. Opportunities to rise to the call and be faithful to serve where God has us.
We Each Do Our Part
Pastor Josh talked in our Win Build Send series about the importance of our being servants (as Believers). To work for the Lord in blessing others and partnering with Jesus for the Great Commission. The Rock Church believes that every member of the church is called to be a minister for the Gospel. It’s not just the pastors, deacons, or staff. We are all called to participate in the work of the Gospel.
With the exciting plans for our upcoming 4th Service (Take this survey for your household), come even more opportunities for us. Ones where we can faithfully attend to the God-given section of the wall we’re to build. Our chance to help build the wall and raise the barn. We can do it all when each one does their part.
On the wall with you,
