We take power and electricity for granted. That is to say, I do. I didn’t realize how dependent I am on the power till this past May.
It was a typical Wednesday morning. And then suddenly, the power went off and on three times. Next, it was partially on, and eventually only certain rooms worked! I called Rocky Mountain Power, and a repairman showed up. He discovered that something had killed one of the two main lines to the house.
Two days later, the Rocky Mountain Power repairman returned. He tried to pull the damaged line but couldn’t. So he called in two other co-workers plus a mini excavator. The excavator also failed to pull the old line! Finally, they cut into the conduit and definitely found a mess.
Years ago, before we bought the house, someone had punched a hole through the basement wall and cut into the 240-volt power conduit. Simply put, they illegally tapped power before the meter. It sat like that for years. Finally, it rusted out and failed on that Wednesday.
I then called an electrician from the church. He replaced the conduit and re-ran the new line. We now have a shiny new conduit and power line.
It was definitely a powerful reminder to me. We are indeed dependent on power for our modern American life: lighting, heating, cooling, food, cooking, internet, and more.
And Christian, do you realize that even more so, we are dependent on the Power of God for everything?
Examples Everywhere
Without question, the idea of God’s power is all over the New Testament. Here are some examples.
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
“For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power.” — 1 Corinthians 4:20
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.” — 2 Peter 1:3
Do you realize we have the power to fix the entire planet today? To change lives? Also, to fix broken families? Along with helping people with mental health struggles? Plus defeating addictions and besetting sins?
Are you frequently asking God for His power day to day in prayer? When life is pressing in, do you remember to operate out of God’s power and not your own?
