Providence

Providence — a word by Pastor Billy Johnson from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "God’s providence overwhelmed me. How incredibly detailed He must be to be truly providential in everything. "

Lately, on my drive home from work, I’ve been intentionally quiet. Off goes the radio, and I sit in the silence. I think about how glorious God is and how near He is to me. I don’t ask anything in prayer, or even pray out loud. In the same way, my thoughts are about Him, and I quietly praise Him. Along with that, I enjoy the indwelling of His Spirit in me.

More recently, on one of these quiet drives home, God’s providence overwhelmed me. How incredibly detailed He must be to be truly providential in everything.

What is providence? I appreciate how the Heidelberg Catechism defines it. It asks,

Q. “What do you understand by the providence of God?”

A. “Providence is the almighty and ever present power of God by which he upholds, as with his hand, heaven and earth and all creatures, and so rules them that leaf and blade, rain and drought, fruitful and lean years, food and drink, health and sickness, prosperity and poverty—all things, in fact, come to us not by chance but from his fatherly hand.” (Heidelberg Catechism, #27)

Simply put, God is the Creator of everything in the universe and beyond. He is also actively in control of everything in the universe and beyond. Everything. From the largest galaxy down to the smallest molecule.

“If there is one single molecule in this universe running around loose, totally free of God’s sovereignty, then we have no guarantee that a single promise of God will ever be fulfilled.” —

R.C. Sproul

He Is In Charge

In other words, there are no maverick molecules. On the contrary, God is in charge of them all.

Consider how many choices you make each day. It follows that you certainly have an opportunity to manipulate a lot of molecules. Then, multiply that by everyone in the state of Utah, in America, and the world. Now, multiply that by weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, millennia… that’s a LOT of molecule manipulation. And God is forever providential over ALL of them!

Furthermore, think about nature and animals, planets, solar systems, and galaxies. Even the Spiritual realm. He is absolutely and fully in control of all of it.

Not only that, but the Bible tells us that He cares for us personally and will work out evil for our good and His glory.

“As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!” — Psalm 40:17

This sovereign God rules and reigns more than we could imagine. He cares for us in ways we could never understand. If this God is for us, who could be against us?

In awe,

Billy
