My wife recently gave birth to our fifth child, a wonderful baby boy. He is truly God’s gift to our family. Even after five children, the process of forming a human body still amazes me. That process, along with wrapping it around an eternal soul, is no doubt an incredibly complicated thing. And it happens with very little knowledge of the mother. God is “knitting together” a baby inside of her, and the child gives absolutely no input or permission as God knits him together.
A brother and I were talking in the lobby after church one night. We were in wonder of the fact that our wives didn’t have to take a class or watch YouTube videos to learn about how to put the baby together in the womb. Instead, their bodies knew exactly how to facilitate the miracle going on inside of them.
My newborn son didn’t need to learn how to grow eyelids or even how to close them when he wanted to sleep. He didn’t have to learn how to cry to sound the alarm that he needed something or stop crying when he got what he needed. God gave him the substance and the knowledge to perform all these movements of self-preservation on day one. I wonder how long it would take a software engineer to program and execute what a baby is able to assess and communicate on its very first day under the sun.
Let me continue with the computer analogy. While my baby boy may have only had the “operating system” loaded when he was born, day by day, he will fill his memory and his hard drive. There will be experiences, relationships, and ideas. Additionally, there will be trials, victories, and wisdom. Along with that will be foolishness, losses, joy, and everything else this life has for him. Just like all of us, he will only be able to live this life one day at a time. But, even before he was born, God knew every single one of his days.
There is incredible comfort in that, because I know God is good, He is faithful, He is just. Also, He is kind, and He is loving. Equally important, He alone is the one who intricately knit my boy together and gave him an eternal soul to glorify God and enjoy Him with. Each one of us has that same claim. God knit each one of us together; He holds us together in His goodness.
Some of our hard drives are getting full and we’ve seen almost all the days God has written for us. Christian, hold fast hope. You can be sure that God gave you an eternal soul and He will guard and care for that soul with all His might for all eternity. For the rest of your days, use that soul (in whatever is left of your body) to glorify God with. And He will give you joy everlasting.
