Staying in the Lane

Comments Off on Staying in the Lane

Recently, I was driving our Subaru Outback when I had a small (but memorable) reminder of how easy it is to drift.

Our Outback has a feature called Lane Keep Assist. It monitors the lane markings on the road, and when the vehicle begins to drift, it sounds an alarm. At the same time, it gently pulls the steering wheel back toward the center. On this particular trip, I lost concentration for just a moment. Before I realized what was happening, the alarm sounded, and the steering wheel corrected my direction. It jolted me to full alertness. Thankfully, I stayed safely on the road.

That moment made me think about how easily we can drift spiritually.

Most Christians do not wake up one morning and decide to get off course. Drifting usually happens slowly. We get distracted. Then we grow tired. Finally, we start listening to competing voices. Good things become ultimate things. Little by little, our eyes move away from Jesus.

That’s why I am so excited to kick off our upcoming teaching series through the book of Colossians (beginning July 4 & 5).

Jesus Is Enough

Colossians is a short letter with a massive message: Jesus is enough.

The church in Colosse was beginning to drift. False teachings and spiritual-sounding ideas had crossed into the church. People were not necessarily rejecting Jesus. Instead, they were adding to Jesus. Paul wrote to pull them back to the center. He reminded them that Christ is supreme, sufficient, and worthy of first place. In everything.

In many ways, Colossians is God’s Lane Keep Assist for the Church. It always alerts us when we drift from the Truth. Additionally, it corrects our course when we wander into spiritual confusion. Also, it points us back to the only safe road: a life centered on Jesus.

Over the next several months, we’ll explore who Jesus is and what He has done. Equally important, why He is enough, and how following Him changes everything. He changes our minds, our homes, our relationships, our work, and our witness.

I believe this series will be deeply encouraging and spiritually strengthening for our church family.

Let’s begin this journey together — and let’s keep heading straight toward Jesus.

Keeping our course set on Christ,

Bill
