“Then Jonathan said to the young man who was carrying his armor, ‘Come and let us cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; perhaps the Lord will work for us, for the Lord is not restrained to save by many or few’” (1 Samuel 14:6).
This verse really challenges me. I love how Jonathan seems to say so nonchalantly, “Come let us cross over…” Jonathan was such a stud, ready to walk right into the enemy’s camp without hesitation! Me? I usually feel like the robot in that old Lost in Space TV show: “Danger, Will Robinson, danger!” If I’m honest with myself, I have to admit that I allow circumstances in life to restrain me. Finances, poor health, lack of time, and even lack of faith can sometimes coagulate my courage, preventing me from stepping out for the Lord.
What is curious is that I haven’t always been like this. I remember the days of my reckless youth, feeling very invincible in life. Sure, I was a bit naive and often paid the price for my shortsightedness. But nonetheless, it was a freeing and exhilarating time of life!
I think that’s exactly how God wants all His children to feel! I believe He loves to take us to a place of unabashed courage and faith, because He knows that’s where we will thrive. I’m not talking about self-confidence, ability, or strength in numbers. I’m talking about utter dependence upon a loving God.
In the Bible there are numerous examples of God restraining men and women so that He may reveal Himself UNrestrained. May God continue to give us His vision and godly restraint so we can live wholehearted and courageous lives — because the time is short. “[Our] days are like an evening shadow; [we] wither away like grass”(Psalm 102:11).
As our lives on earth rapidly approach their end, let’s courageously press on toward the abundant life that Christ has promised.
