The Word Good, A Word Blog Post by Pastor Bryan Edwards of The Rock Church in Draper Utah.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever!” — 1 Chronicles 16:34

The word GOOD has become very ordinary and mundane to me lately. I find myself regularly saying things like, “Today is going to be a good day!”, “This coffee is really good.” and even “Goodnight!” without really considering the intent of the word. I am sure you’ve used this word plenty of times today as well.

To say that something is good is fine and dandy. But, where it’s beginning to pester me, is when I see the word in my Bible. When Scripture tells me that the Lord is good, I have noticed that I am not really considering what that truly means. I am so used to proclaiming that something is good that the word has lost much of its meaning. I hope that I can help you (and me) try and redeem this word — a word which has lost some significance.

When we are told that God is good, we are being reminded to look back at all of the wonderful things He has done — and continues to do. Miracles such as: creating the heavens and earth (Genesis 1:1), calling us to be a people for Himself (2 Timothy 1:9), parting the Red Sea (Exodus 14) and raising our Savior from the grave (John 20)! Not to mention His kindness and patience toward us when we sin, His tenderness toward us when we are weary and His closeness to us in our times of need. Yes, He really is that good!

So, when the Bible tells us to “give thanks to the LORD, for He is good…” our ears should perk up! Our hearts should ERUPT with gladness as we ponder all the things that demonstrate His GOODness! The Lord has been good in the past, He is good to us today and He will continue to be good in the future. When we think about all of that, the word good starts to get some of its meaning back.

Today, you and I are going to declare many things to be good, great and even awesome. And when we do, let’s use them as reminders to take a moment and admire God for His infinitely more amazing goodness!

I hope you have a GOOD day! 😉

Bryan
