From Fear to Faith

From Fear to Faith, a word by pastor Steve McInroy from The Rock Church in Draper, Utah.

I have met regularly with different groups of people for over 20 years; I’m very thankful for these “iron sharpening iron” types of relationships. I recently met with some friends and it was similar to so many of the gatherings that I’ve participated in over the years — meeting and talking about our faith in Jesus. We always encourage each other with what God is teaching us. He usually provides a theme, idea or even a struggle that is common to the group. His most recent theme was fear.

It’s pretty easy to go into lengthy conversations on this topic because almost every person in the world faces some type of circumstantial or thought-provoking fear. I shared with my group that a number of dear friends of mine (including my own mother), are facing serious health challenges. I don’t always know what to say to these people to help comfort their fears. Honestly, on the surface there doesn’t appear to be much I can personally do to help them … or is there?

I was reminded that in faith, we can pray to the Creator of ALL things and intercede for our friends and family — at any time or place. There is power in prayer! I have personally experienced a moving in my own heart this week (and in the hearts of family and friends) — a genuine move from fear to faith. God really does answer prayers.

These verses come to mind as I think about this:

“Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord; hear my urgent cry.” — Psalm 86:6

“Who can be compared with the Lord our God, who is enthroned on high? He stoops down on heaven and earth.” — Psalm 113:5-6

“Fear of the Lord leads to life, bringing security and protection from harm.” — Proverbs 19:23

Indeed, the fear of the Lord leads to life. He moves, even stoops down, to hear our prayers. Because of that, our fear of circumstances and/or our fear of people can turn into the fear of God in faith. The good fear, if you will. Dear brothers and sisters, there is a lot we can do to help ourselves (and others) move from fear to faith. Be faithful to pray for others and with them; He who is faithful will respond!

Join me in daily praying and moving from fear to faith!
