Oh, Hold Them Back!

Oh, Hold Them Back! A word by pastor Mac from The Rock Church in Draper, Utah. He gently helps me and reminds me of Truth and what is important to Him. People. Yes, people — oh, hold them back. The Lord doesn’t want anyone to perish.

“Deliver those who are being taken away to death, And those who are staggering to slaughter, Oh hold them back. If you say, ‘See, we did not know this,’ Does He not consider it who weighs the heart? And does He not know it who keeps your soul? And will He not render to man according to his work?” — Proverbs 24:11-12

These particular verses are extremely challenging for me. Especially the four words OH HOLD THEM BACK. During my morning devotions, I have read them at least once a month for many years. Every time I do, I feel a sense of urgency. This is one area where I know the onus is on me. I cannot “pass the buck” or hand this responsibility off to someone who I think is perhaps more gifted or more capable than I am. It’s up to me to walk in the Spirit and help those who are staggering toward slaughter.

I remember when I was a teenager (a long, long time ago). I convinced one of my Iowa farm boy friends to jump off the boat we were in (even though he didn’t know how to swim). Crazy thing is, he did jump and almost drowned! A couple of us had to go in and pull him out. Why didn’t I just hold him back?

Even though I’m a pastor, I sometimes stress over speaking with people, especially crowds. Lately, while worshiping at church, I look out over all the people God is drawing to Himself; I see sheep without a shepherd. It’s heavy on my heart. The sad thing is that when I’m walking in my flesh, I can easily shrug off the burden for people and continue living on my “me planet.”

The Lord has been so kind to me over the years. He gently helps me and reminds me of Truth and what is important to Him. People. Yes, people — oh, hold them back. The Lord doesn’t want anyone to perish. I am a Believer and God’s Spirit lives inside of me. I’m not alone; the onus is on me and my Lord. It’s on all of us. I’ve been told that if God calls you to do something then He will provide the means to accomplish it. All I can say is, “Amen!” I’ve lived it and I’ve seen Him do absolutely astounding things through many people’s lives.

So, here is my prayer for us. Lord, thank you for involving us in what You are doing. Please help us to faithfully hold back those who are staggering toward slaughter.

Mac
