A Servant’s Heart

A Servant;s Heart, a word from pastor Billy Johnson from The Rock Church in Draper, Utah. "The Bible is clear, we need to adopt the heart of a servant. We need to humble ourselves and make a habit of considering others better than ourselves."

When you’re asked to help someone move, serve at church, or take someone a meal, what is your first reaction? Is it, “I don’t want to do that, I serve enough already. Someone who doesn’t already serve can do it.”? Maybe it’s, “Well, if nobody else does, I will.”? For some, it might be, “I’d love to! I thought you’d never ask!”?

The Bible is clear, we need to adopt the heart of a servant. We need to humble ourselves and make a habit of considering others better than ourselves. Consider Philippians 2:3-4, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

The Apostle Peter says to shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion but willingly and eagerly (1 Peter 5:2). We should strive to be cheerful in our service. Just like at Chick-Fil-A when you say “thank you” and they say “my pleasure.” We should serve without grumbling, complaining or disputing (Philippians 2:14).

As servants of God, we are to be looking for heavenly rewards, not earthly rewards or recognition. We need to know that our service on earth will reap eternal rewards. Look at these verses: Ephesians 6:8 “…knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord.” and Colossians 3:24 “…knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

God promises eternal rewards for those who serve Him! Doesn’t this make you want to be the greatest servant in our church? I know these verses make me want to be a better servant and convict me to respond differently when I get asked to serve.

Growing,

Billy
