Suddenly – a word by Pastor Josh Whitney from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "Just as Aiden and I were suddenly shoved into a blizzard, so our Lord will return — dramatically and when we least expect it."

“For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:2

My son, Aiden, has his learner’s permit; we go driving most weekends to get his required 40 hours of experience. It rained at our house a couple weekends ago. I thought we could get some practice driving in “bad weather.” There was only light rain when we started out.

However, as we crested the hill west of our house, it was like we entered a different microclimate.

Suddenly, a few inches of snow covered the pavement and two cars were wrecked on the side of the road. Aiden quickly braked, our car locked up and we began sliding toward another car.

Fortunately, we didn’t hit it. After that, I was very close to stopping the lesson and driving home. But, he slowed down and drove for another hour. We saw three different accidents. At one point, cars were only going about 20 m.p.h. on Interstate I-80 because it was so treacherous.

Just as Aiden and I were suddenly shoved into a blizzard, so our Lord will return — dramatically and when we least expect it. This verse in Thessalonians reminds us that God’s judgment will come suddenly. But, I love verse four — the Lord reminds us, as Christians, we shouldn’t be surprised!

Are we prepared for the day when we see the Lord? We should be ready.

Preparing,

Josh
