A Worldview Assessment

A Worldview Assessment – a word by Pastor Josh Whitney from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "In the biblical worldview, God lovingly created us in His image. However, in the naturalistic/evolutionary worldview, we are cosmic accidents"

“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.” — Colossians 2:8

A few weeks ago, The Rock pastors attended the M28 Alliance Pastor’s Conference. While there, we visited the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in Kentucky. The exhibits, presentations, conversations and fellowship were great!

One of the exhibits at the museum was on ultimate questions (or worldview questions). A topic we recently covered at church. These questions cover topics of existence, meaning, morality and destiny.

Questions to Consider

  • “How did we get here?”

In the biblical worldview, God lovingly created us in His image. However, in the naturalistic/evolutionary worldview, we are cosmic accidents, simply the product of time and chance.

  • “Why are we here?”

In the biblical worldview, we are here to love God, love one another and bring God glory. On the other hand, in the naturalistic/evolutionary worldview, there is no purpose for life. We make up our own version of “do whatever makes you happy”. Hopefully, your “happy” doesn’t hurt others.

  • “How should we live?”

In the biblical worldview, God is the standard for right and wrong. Morality is rooted in God’s Word. Alternatively, in the naturalistic/evolutionary worldview, people and society make up right and wrong. Obviously, this varies widely.

  • “Where are we going?”

In the biblical worldview, everyone will live forever, either in heaven with God or separated from God in the lake of fire. By comparison, in the naturalistic/evolutionary view, there is no afterlife. Everyone we’ve ever known eventually ceases to exist. Additionally, everything we have ever done has no lasting significance.

Undeniably, the contrast between these two worldviews couldn’t be more striking.

Remembering why I am here,

Josh
