Take Out the Trash

Take Out the Trash – a word from Pastor Tony D'Amico from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "We cannot fill a space that is already full. Take out the trash in your life and let Jesus Christ fill you up!"

Every once in a while, I go through all the “stuff” in my house. I take inventory of things that are useful and decide what things are just taking up space. Then, I’ll put anything useless into a big pile and take it out to the trash. If we’re honest with ourselves, we all have “stuff” we need to take inventory of, don’t we? We need to know what’s useful and what’s not.

This relates to us spiritually as well. Specifically, we need to carefully look at our spiritual lives. There are absolutely things we hold on to that are just taking up space. They fill up our minds and hearts. What’s in your life that is either useful or useless to God? As you clean out the useless, you’ll find that you have some new, empty holes that need to be filled. Fill them with Jesus Christ.

Let Jesus Fill You

If we’re not letting Jesus fill our minds and hearts, He isn’t going to use us to our full capacity. Jesus said, “I am the vine and you are the branches, if a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). In fact, if we are not filling this new space in our heart with Jesus, then it’s pointless.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Let God transform your cleared out mind. Then, you’ll be able to test what His will is for your life.

As Christians, we need to consistently take a close look at our lives. Ask God to help you clean out the junk and fill the space with Jesus. Additionally, ask Him to continually renew your mind. That’s the only way we can know His good, pleasing and perfect will for our lives. We cannot fill a space that is already full. Take out the trash in your life and let Jesus Christ fill you up!

Making room for Jesus,

Tony
