“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV)
It can be so easy to be discouraged. Whether it’s something in our own lives or the world around us, we are surrounded by hard situations and events. Perhaps your health is deteriorating, your job is going poorly, or your marriage is in shambles? Maybe a loved one is struggling? Do you look at the state of our world today and wonder what will happen next? No matter what the circumstances, life can be (and is) very hard to rejoice in. But, that is exactly what the Lord calls us to do!
To be honest, I can easily be a pessimist (though I try to justify it as being a realist). I tend to look at the current or potential negatives in situations. It’s easy to be critical of myself and also the people around me. I am not proud of this, but it’s true. You might not have this problem. This attitude frequently leads me to discouragement or frustration; I miss the amazing good around me. These verses in Thessalonians are always such a good slap to my head.
I Want to Be Better
I wonder what would happen if we truly lived with the mindset of rejoicing in all circumstances? Is it possible to pray and be thankful in every season? Instead of quickly getting disheartened about life, we would freely walk in the joy of the Lord. We can live with the peace that is beyond comprehension. I want to be better at consciously praising God for the tremendous good He has placed in my life. Will you join me in that?
I don’t want to “be that guy” – the one who is demoralized from the “what if’s” and the “could be’s” in life. Instead, I want to find my joy in the fact that the Creator of the universe has my life in His hands. As a result, I can rejoice in the hardships, difficulties and unknowns.
Above all, I want to find encouragement in knowing God has forgiven my sins and I have a relationship with Him! As Psalm 32:1 says, “O the happiness of him whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” (YLT)
