Owner’s Manual

Owner’s Manual – a word by Pastor Josh Whitney from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. “The commercial said, ‘If only there were an owner’s manual for relationships?’” However, since I turned it off, we will never know.

“Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts.” — Psalm 119:98-100

The clock radio alarm went off at 5:40 a.m.; I turned it off and got out of bed. My wife said, “What was the rest of that commercial? The one that was just on?” I said, “I didn’t hear.” (A statement to my auto-piloting when I get up.) She replied, “The commercial said, ‘If only there were an owner’s manual for relationships?’” However, since I turned it off, we will never know.

My wife and I spent some time reading the Owner’s Manual to start our days. After that, our family shared thoughts with each other from the Owner’s Manual at breakfast. Later on that morning, I sent a section from the Owner’s Manual to a friend to encourage him. Driving around town, I listened to some of the Owner’s Manual. Throughout the rest of the day (in my thoughts, words, and actions) I strove to obey the Owner’s Manual.

His Word Gives So Much

This section of verses from Psalm 119 is incredibly powerful. God’s Word (i.e., the Owner’s Manual) gives wisdom and understanding. We can be wiser than our enemies, teachers, and the aged (who apparently aren’t reading God’s Word) if we study and obey it. In other words, the humble Christian (who is reading and obeying God’s Word) can see more than the “smartest people” on the planet!

Without a doubt, God’s Word gives us wisdom in relationships, finances, parenting, marriage, speech, emotions, friendships, and temptation. It has thoughts for us to obey related to our work, singleness, disappointments, failures, dreams, sexuality, gender, shopping, and entertainment.

Thank God for the Owner’s Manual!

Josh
