Hospitality seems to be less popular nowadays than what I remember throughout my life. It’s also different from what I’ve read about in the past. In biblical times, showing hospitality to strangers was an absolute privilege. On top of that, people would vie for the chance to do so. Thankfully, many people worldwide still go out of their way to invite others into their homes to share a meal.
Something special happens when we let down our guard and focus on others. On many occasions (and in many places), my wife and I have sat at the tables of generous people. Some of you reading this were kind enough to open your homes to us. Thank you! That act of kindness is bearing fruit in our family. Here is a great verse to consider.
“When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.” — Romans 12:13
It’s Not Always Easy
Honestly, I can’t say that I am always eager to show hospitality. God’s Word certainly convicts me to try harder. I can quickly come up with excuses. A few maybe even viable? “I’m not feeling well.” or “I don’t have time to shop for food and prepare it.” or “I’m not a very good cook, and my home is in shambles.” And then, of course, there are the different personalities of people you invite over. “He is so odd, she talks too much, or their kids are so loud.” I think Scripture challenges us to go beyond our comfort zone. Yes, people are generally weirdos. Get over it. And quite possibly, the inconvenience of it all is a healthy way to grow us to become unselfish. Here is another verse to consider.
“Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it.” — Hebrews 13:2
Could it be that you are the stranger? Embrace that. Over time, social interactions have moved from actually being in each other’s physical presence to screen time. Not to mention, I believe computers and COVID have fanned the flames of us being okay with not being together. I’m a little old and gray, and I certainly realize there is tremendous value in our technical advances. However, social media has changed us. I’ve had many convenient meetings and interactions with family and friends without brushing my teeth or putting gas in the car. Admittedly, I’m very thankful for that option, and I’m not anti-whatever in spite of what you might be thinking.
Scripture Calls Us
I’m simply saying Scripture calls us to be hospitable. That could very well include entertaining angels via social media. Of course, hospitality goes way beyond dinner. There are actually so many ways to be kind and hospitable. I’m just saying the ancient art of sharing a meal is precious. Not to mention having angels in your home is pretty cool as well. If I could, please allow me to encourage you to always be eager to practice hospitality.
