  1. Jesus in the Middle

Jesus in the Middle – a word by Pastor Bill Young from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "Allow Jesus to get in between you and your trials. Imagine Him stepping into the middle of your despair, grief, pain, or stress."

As a pastor, I am for sure not immune to feeling overwhelmed by difficulties. Also, whether it’s physical, mental, or emotional, life can sometimes make me feel like I’m drowning.

Perhaps the disciples felt this way. In fact, in the gospels of John, Mark, and Matthew, we are told how these fishers of men were overwhelmed with fear at the sight of their teacher walking on water through a storm. As a result, it says they were “terrified” because they thought they saw a ghost!

Isn’t it good to know we are not the only ones who experience fear and anxiety?

  2. Grief-Stained Joy

Grief-Stained Joy — a word by Pastor Steve McInroy from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "Our grief is certainly not erased like the shaking of an imaginary etch-a-sketch. It’s real, and it’s also necessary."

Every day, I read from Milton Vincent’s book, “A Gospel Primer.” It has a 31-part section that fits nicely into my daily devotional routine. This phrase always catches me each time I read it (on the 14th of the month). He refers to a “grief-stained joy.” That idea resonates with me deeply when contemplating life. Especially today, as I write this, about ten steps away from my wife Jeanne’s hospital bed — it’s  awkwardly positioned in our bedroom. This verse specifically comes to mind as I search for solace.

“If your instructions hadn’t sustained me with joy, I would have died in my misery.” — Psalm 119:92

  3. Shield of Faith

Shield of Faith – a word by Pastor Tony D'Amico from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "It’s a shield that deflects the lies, temptations, and fears, as well as the doubts that Satan throws at us."

“In all circumstances, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.” — Ephesians 6:16

Paul used this metaphor to represent the Christian’s faith and belief in God. This shield unquestionably extinguishes all (not just some) of the flaming darts the evil one shoots at you.

Just as a physical shield protects a warrior in battle, so, too, the Shield of Faith protects us from the devil’s spiritual attacks. It’s a shield that deflects the lies, temptations, and fears, as well as the doubts that Satan throws at us.

  4. Let it Snow!

Let it Snow! – A word by Pastor Steve McInroy from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "the most sensible thing possible. In the storms of my life, I need to trust the Lord and say to Him, “let it snow."

I have a love/hate relationship with snow. The lovely song that Frank Sinatra made famous, “Let It Snow,” brings a certain whimsical set of emotions. Yes, the snow is beautiful! Yet, my back is aching, and driving is stressful. When pondering the statement “let it snow,” I can’t help but be reminded of the One (and only One) who controls the snow.

  5. Smooth Stones

Smooth Stones – a word by Pastor Bill Young from The Rock Church in draper, UT. " The long line of white surf comes up with its everlasting roar, and rattles and thunders among the stones on the shore."

In a recent message, I shared an illustration that has made an unmistakable impact on my life. I found this story in the devotional by L.B. Cowman, “Streams In The Desert” (July 7 entry):

“There is a very famous “Pebble Beach” at Pescadero, on the California coast. The long line of white surf comes up with its everlasting roar, and rattles and thunders among the stones on the shore. They are caught in the arms of the pitiless waves, and tossed and rolled, and rubbed together, and ground against the sharp-grained cliffs. Day and night forever the ceaseless attrition goes on–never any rest. And the result?

  6. Seek in Faith

Seek in Faith – a word by Pastor Tony D'Amico from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "God’s wisdom is available to all and is given very generously to those who ask! There is only one condition — we need to ask in FAITH"

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all of his ways.” — James 1:5-8

How often we have opposition or trials in our lives and try to handle them on our own. It’s easy to do because we love to fix our own problems and help others fix theirs. But, we need to remember not to rely on our own wisdom in doing this; we need the wisdom of God. When we’re faced with troubles, He will help us generously, without hesitation.

  7. Finding Rest

Finding Rest – a word by Pastor Caleb Yetton from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "All of these things keep us from finding rest on the ride. At times, we can fear that God Himself is asleep at the wheel."

One of the more frustrating things for me in life is not being able to fall asleep. I don’t often have trouble with this, but I have gone through spells of it. Sometimes, it happens when I first get in bed. Other times, it’s when I wake up in the middle of the night (and can’t fall back to sleep). Instead of finding rest, my mind races, thinking about all there is to worry about in life.

In the still of the night, it’s so easy to reflect on those things that scare us or give us anxiety. Or, perhaps we go through items on the to-do list that we missed that day. Health, relationships, finances, parenting, news of war, what does the future hold? Admittedly, it can all feel paralyzing.

  8. Miracles of God

Miracles of God – a word by Pastor Billy Johnson from The Rock Church in Draper, UT. "I’m so thankful that we serve a powerful God — without a doubt, One who always has a personal interest in our lives!"

In a recent sermon of mine, I mentioned four of my favorite displays of God’s power (found in the Old Testament). They were: Creation, the Flood, parting the Red Sea, and making the sun stand still.

I’ve had a good time going through Jesus’ New Testament miracles, relating them to miraculous events in the Old Testament. There are a lot of similarities between His miracles and those found in the Old Testament. One thing that has undeniably stood out to me, is how personal all of Jesus’ miracles were.
